The Skin Check: Meet Melissa Kultgen

On the latest episode of the Skin Check, I had the opportunity to sit down with one of Low Ultraviolet‘s newest ambassadors Melissa Kultgen! Like me, Melissa grew up in Wisconsin – a great reminder that melanoma doesn’t just occur in warm-weather states. Melanoma doesn’t discriminate, even in the Midwest.

Melissa is a mom, a daughter, a teacher, a rescue dog mom, an advocate and caregiver. When Melissa was pregnant with her daughter, a spot on her lip that started as a speck began to grow uncontrollably.

Melissa has become a powerful advocate in the melanoma community and her story highlights the importance of dermatology as part of prenatal care. Pregnancy hormones can have a large impact on our bodies and it’s vital to have a care team you trust.

Melissa also very vulnerably shares what it has been like to face a cancer diagnosis when her mom was already a two-time cancer survivor. At the time of our conversation, Melissa’s mom was bravely fighting her third battle with cancer. Although she passed away the week this episode came out, it’s important to recognize that she will always be a survivor.
